How Often Should You Clean Your Carpet in Southern California?
The real answer depends on pets, kids, allergies and LA's own problems, like Santa Ana dust and beach sand. Here's a simple schedule that fits most homes.
The textbook answer is “every 12 to 18 months.” It’s not wrong, but it’s the answer for a home with no pets, no kids and nobody wearing shoes indoors. That home doesn’t exist in Los Angeles.
So let’s do this properly.
Why “when it looks dirty” is too late
Carpet hides dirt remarkably well. Most of what’s in it is dry grit (sand, dust, tracked-in soil) that sinks to the base of the fibers where you can’t see it. Every time someone walks across the room, that grit grinds against the fibers like fine sandpaper. By the time a traffic lane looks gray, some of that wear has already happened, and no cleaning can reverse worn fiber.
Cleaning on a schedule isn’t about looks. It’s about getting the grit out before it does damage.
A simple schedule
| Your home | Professional cleaning |
|---|---|
| One or two adults, no pets, shoes off | Every 12–18 months |
| Kids, or shoes on indoors | Every 9–12 months |
| One pet | Every 6–12 months |
| Several pets, or a pet with accidents | Every 3–6 months, plus spot treatment |
| Allergies or asthma in the house | Every 6 months |
| Rental between tenants | At every move-out |
Many carpet manufacturers also require professional cleaning on a schedule (often every 12 to 24 months) to keep the warranty valid. If your carpet is fairly new, it’s worth digging out the paperwork and checking.
What makes Southern California different
Santa Ana winds
Every fall and winter, the Santa Anas push fine, dry dust from the desert into the basin. It settles everywhere, including deep in carpet pile. If you’ve ever wiped a windowsill in November and wondered where all that came from, your carpet got the same delivery. A cleaning in late winter or early spring, after the windy season, is well timed.
Beach sand
If anyone in your house goes to the beach, sand comes home. In Santa Monica and the rest of the Westside it’s constant. Sand is heavy and abrasive, and it’s the single hardest-wearing thing we pull out of carpets. Vacuum entry areas often and think about cleaning a bit more frequently.
Heat and dust in the Valley
Summer from Calabasas to Thousand Oaks, and across the Valley, means windows open, AC running and dust everywhere. The upside: carpets dry fast in warm, dry air.
Wildfire smoke and ash
After a smoke event, fine particles settle into soft surfaces. Light residue usually cleans out of carpet and upholstery. Heavy smoke damage is a restoration job, often handled through insurance.
Signs you should book sooner
- Traffic lanes look gray or flat compared to the rest of the room.
- The carpet feels slightly crunchy or sticky underfoot (often old soap residue).
- A smell comes back on humid days, usually from pet urine in the pad.
- Allergy symptoms are worse indoors than outside.
- You’re moving out, moving in, or putting the house on the market.
What you can do between cleanings
Vacuum more than you think you need to. Twice a week in busy areas, once a week elsewhere, slowly, with overlapping passes. Most of the soil in carpet is dry, and a good vacuum removes most of it.
Use mats at the doors. One outside and one inside catches a surprising amount of sand and grit before it reaches the carpet.
Blot spills right away. Blot with a white cloth and cool water. Don’t rub, and don’t reach for a strong household cleaner. Many leave residue that attracts dirt, and some set stains.
Go shoes-off if you can. It’s the single most effective thing you can do for carpet life.
